The letters were written to Anna Wilcox, of Smyrna, Chenango County, New York. 38 (possibly 39) were written by four of her male cousins who were serving in the Union Army. The remaining letters were written by other relatives of Miss Wilcox. 2 of the letters were written to persons other than Miss Wilcox. 24 letters are by William S. Pike, 5 by Emory Wilcox, 7 by Leroy B. Pike, 3 by John Pike, 1 by Ruth Pike, 1 by Corintha Pike, 2 by Jeanette T. Pike, and 3 by Benjamin Stover.
