Ogilvie, John, 1724-1774

Anglican clergyman, who was probably born in New York City. He graduated from Yale in 1748. After ordination in London, 1749, Ogilvie returned to America with an appointment at Saint Peter's Church in Albany, New York as missionary to the Mohawk Indians. He also served as military chaplin, 1756-1760, primarily for British troops, under the command of General Sir William Johnson during the French and Indian War. In 1764, he was appointed assistant minister of Trinity Church in New York City, where he ministered until his death.
