Huntingdon, Henry Hastings, Earl of, ca. 1535-1595.

Henry Hastings, 3rd Earl of Huntingdon, noted Puritan politician and a heir presumptive to the crown. During the Northern Rebellion (1569-1570), he was appointed a custodian of Mary Queen of Scots (1569). In 1572, he was appointed Lord President of the Council of the North, and i573, constituted Lord Lieutenant of York, Northumerland, Cumberland, Westmoreland, and bishopric of Durham (1587). In 1581 he commanded the troops stationed on the northern borders in conjunction with the trial of James Douglas, Earl of Morton, and later was active in taking measures against the threatened Spanish invasion of 1588.
