William Lambert was born free in Trenton, New Jersey, November 17, 1820. As a youth he was taken to Buffalo, where he found employment as cabin boy on Great Lakes vessels. He settled in Detroit in 1838 and opened a tailoring and cleaning shop at 10 East Woodbridge. He was one of the first African Americans to engage in work of the Underground Railway and was one of its most active workers. He died in Detroit, in April, 1890. (from Woodford, Frank B.
