He was the son of Judge William Francis Shackelford and Elizabeth Ashby Shackelford of Georgetown, S.C., whose other children included Anne Peyre Shackelford (d. 1886), who married John C. Dinnies, editor of the New Orleans Price Current; Elizabeth Ashby Shackelford (d. 1904), who married Dr. Edward Porcher in 1835; and Martha Sarah Shackelford (1819-1903), who married William W. Harllee (1812-1897). James McBride Shackelford was married three times; his second wife was Amelia Otis, his third wife, Jane Shackelford (a cousin).
