George M. Pinney was a Baptist minister in Wisconsin before turning to politics. He travelled to Montana Territory and became the U.S. Marshal in Virginia City. He also operated the town's newspaper The Montana Post. In an argument over an article published in Pinney's newspaper, he shot and killed a former governor of Wisconsin, S.W.
