Heberle, Rudolf, 1896-1991

Rudolf Heberle was born in Germany in 1896 and studied sociology under Frederick Tonnies in the years following the First World War. In 1924 he was married to Tonnies' daughter, Franziska, and recieved his doctorate. Through the 1920s and 1930s, Heberle taught at several universities in Germany but was forced to emigrate to the United States in 1938 under Nazi pressure. Heberle and his family settled in Baton Rouge after he took a position as a professor of sociology at Louisiana State University. Heberle was awarded a Boyd Professorship in 1955 and he remained on campus until his retirement in 1963. In the years from his retirement to his death in 1991, Heberle gained an international reputation for his teaching, research, and writing in sociology.
