Fortescue, John, Sir, 1531?-1607

Sir John Fortescue, a prominent scholar of Greek and Latin, became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1589. Fortescue became wealthy through his office and connections to the Custom House. Queen Elizabeth granted Fortescue a number of land grants and in 1601 he became Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
