Chicago newspaper publisher, bakery owner and influential Republican Party member. Born in Albion, Illinois, in 1853, Kohlsaat was the confidant of several Presidents. He was a major supporter of the campaign of William McKinley, and influenced the Republicans' adoption of the gold standard plank during the 1896 election.
