John Farrar was born in Lincoln, Massachusetts on July 1, 1779. He received an A.B. from Harvard College in 1803 and an A.M. in 1806. He was a tutor in Greek language at Harvard from 1805 to 1807, when he was named Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. He was Hollis professor until 1836, and among his accomplishments was the publication of a textbook on the elements of algebra. He also received an L.L.D. from Brown University in 1833.
