John Pegram May (1829-1862) of Petersburg, Virginia, was a major in the 12th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, killed in the second battle of Manassas. David Fitzhugh May (1835-1911), a physician from Petersburg, Virginia, served on the city council; in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1879-83; and as Superintendent of Central State Hospital, the nation's first mental institution for blacks.
