American poet, editor, translator, and teacher. Born in New York City, graduated from the City College of New York and the Univ. of Michigan. Began publishing poetry extensively in the 1960s. Deeply interested in ethnopoetics; has translated American Indian poetry and studied Jewish poetry and oral tradition. Has taught widely, most recently at the University of California, San Diego (1988- ).
