Originally of Hanover, N.H., Clapp served as a lieutenant in Bedel's New Hampshire Regiment, July-Nov., 1776; and in the 1st New Hampshire Regiment as a 2d lieutenant, 1776-1778, 1st lieutenant, 1778-1780, and captain, 1780-1781. In 1779, Clapp's regiment participated in Gen. Sullivan's punitive expedition against the Iroquois in Pennsylvania and New York, marching from Easton to Wyoming, Pa., up the Susquehanna River to Tioga, and on into the Finger Lakes Region of New York. In 1786, Clapp settled in Royalton, Vt., where he remained until his death in 1817.
