Mitchell, Edward, 1805-
Arlie Mitchell was the son of Steve and Ellen Mitchell. The family had a homestead cabin on the Barlow Road, and Steve worked maintenance and as tollgate keeper for some time. Arlie and his 8 brothers and sisters were raised near Sandy, Oregon. For a time, the family served as caretakers of the Stephen Coalman homestead and Stephen's young son, Elijah (Lige), whose mother died when he was 18 months old. Lige went on to earn legendary status as a climbing guide on Mt. Hood. Arlie packed and guided hunting and climbing parties on Mt. Hood. He served in the Navy during World War I and returned to the Sandy area.
