Bloomfield Academy (N.J.)

The Bloomfield Academy was founded in 1807, and opened its doors to its first students in 1810. Affiliated with the Old First Church in Bloomfield, the mission of the school was to be a training ground for young men bound for the ministry. The Bloomfield Academy had a reputation that surpassed the academies in both Newark and Orange. The school operated as a private institution until 1866, when it was bought by the Presbytery of Newark, New Jersey, and renamed the German Theological School. Later, the institution became known as the Bloomfield College and Seminary. By 1961, part of the name was dropped, and is known today as Bloomfield College, an independent, four-year college, conferring Bachelor's degrees in a wide variety of fields.
