Joseph Gavit was a native of Albany, New York, who was employed in the New York State Library for 50 years from 1896 to 1946. He began his career as a clerk in library stacks and would eventually work his way up the ladder to the position of Associate Librarian. For much of his career he was superintendent of the stacks.
