Townsend, Charles, 1786-1847
Born in Norwich, Conn. 22 Jan.. 1786. Moved to Buffalo in 1811 with George Coit, his partner in the drug business, and later in ship building and transportation. Townsend served as Niagara County judge from 1813-1826.

James Townsend helped establish the town of Putnamville, Indiana. He also opened the town's first store and inn in 1830. The town's Presbyterian church was organized at the home of Mr. Townsend and his wife the same year. By 1850, Townsend had moved his family to a farm in Clay County, Indiana.
