Rutland Marble Company

The first marble quarries of Vermont were opened in Rutland County at Pittsford. Rutland Marble Company was one of three original marble companies of the area, operating in West Rutland. Opened in 1845 by William Barnes, the quarries produced marble ranging from pure white to dark blue. In 1880, the Vermont Marble Company was formed by businessman, and former governor Redfield Proctor, through his acquisition and consolidation of the Rutland Marble Company and the Sutherland Falls Marble Company (1852). Sunderland Falls Marble became the base of operations, and the town of Sunderland Falls was renamed Proctor. Vermont Marble Company continued mining at both Sunderland Falls and the old Rutland Marble Company quarries in West Rutland.
