Merchant and textile manufacturer. S.N. Dexter was originally from Boston, Mass. where he was a cloth merchant circa 1805. By 1810 he had moved his business to Athens, N.Y., and by 1815 he was an agent for a textile mill in Whitesboro, N.Y., a village situated in Oneida County near Utica. Here he would remain, eventually becoming an agent for the Oriskany Manufacturing Company, which produced woolen cloth.
