Dartmouth College. Society of Social Friends
The Society of Social Friends was established in 1783 as one of the first student organizations at Dartmouth College. The society maintained a student-funded and -managed library, circulating holdings to its members only. Biweekly meetings were a forum for debates, orations, disputations, and other literary exercises, focusing on current events as well as philosophical topics. The United Fraternity split from the Society of Social Friends in 1786 and the two groups were highly competitive. Meetings of the society became less frequent by 1855, its last meeting being held in 1874. The society was legally dissolved in 1904 and its assets were turned over to the college.
