Gene Eisenbeiss (1926-97), a horticulturist, was employed by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for more than 30 years, 26 of which he spent at the U.S. National Arboretum. He was the international registar of cultivated Ilex (Holly) for more than 20 years.
