Joseph Ioor Waring was born in Charleston, South Carolina on September 4, 1897. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1917, and received his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1921. Specializing in pediatrics, Dr. Waring interned at St. Francis Infirmary and Riverside Infirmary, both in Charleston. His residency was at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Tennessee. Dr. Waring also served at Willard Parker Hospital and Bellevue Hospital in New York. Dr. Waring was a clinician with both the Charleston County Health Department and the Charleston County Tuberculosis Association. Dr. Waring was affiliated with the Medical College of South Carolina from 1927 until his death in 1977. He was a clinical professor of pediatrics at the college, and later became the curator of historical collections at the college's Hoffman Library. In 1969, the Hoffman Library was renamed the Waring Historical Library in Dr. Waring's honor, and he was also named a Distinguished Alumnus of the college. Dr. Waring participated in numerous organizations. He served as president of the South Carolina Historical Society, the Medical Chirurgical Club of Charleston, and the Medical Society of South Carolina. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics, and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Association for the History of Medicine. He served as secretary of the Robert Wilson Medical History Club and the Widows and Orphans Society. He was also on the Executive Committee of the South Carolina State Board of Health, and the Historical Board of Charleston. He was also chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of the South Carolina Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Dr. Waring authored three volumes on South Carolina medical history, as well as a history of the South Carolina Medical Association, a history of the Medical College of South Carolina, a booklet for the South Carolina Tricentennial, and over 100 articles on medical and historical subjects. Dr. Waring was the editor of the Journal of the South Carolina Medical Association for 17 years. Honors and awards received by Dr. Waring include an honorary doctorate from the College of Charleston, plaques from the Charleston County Board of Health and the Charleston County Medical Society, and the South Carolina Medical Association's annual award for outstanding service to the organization. Dr. Waring married Ferdinanda Legare, and had three stepchildren. He died on December 21, 1977.
