Johnson, William, 1823-1864

Born in Dryden, New York in 1829. Married Frances Aitken. Came to Oregon in 1852 and settled in Washington County. Died of bronchitis at Umatilla Reservation in 1862.

William Johnson (d. Jan. 1864), was a barber and bootblack who worked for President Lincoln for a year before accompanying him to Washington. President Lincoln successfully sought a position for Johnson in the Treasury Department in November 1861, where Johnson was then employed as a laborer and messenger.
