The Galveston Wharf Company was founded in 1854 as the Galveston Wharf & Cotton Press Company. It operated the ports as well as railway lines and locomotives that connected the Galveston harbor to other railroads in Texas. The company was the centerpiece of a longstanding law suit between the City of Galveston and the Galveston Corporation, the controlling interest in the company. It became municipally owned in 1940 and reorganized as the Galveston Railway, Incorporated in 1987.
