Hufstedler, Shirley M.

Shirley Mount Hufstedler was born on August 24, 1925 in Denver, Colorado. She received a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree from the University of New Mexico in 1945 and a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree from Stanford University in 1949. She was a member of the staff of the Stanford Law Review, 1947 to 1949, and worked as a book review editor from 1948 to 1949. From 1951 to 1961 she was a member of the Los Angeles law firm Beardsley, Hufstedler & Kemble. In 1961, she was appointed Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court, and was elected to that position in 1962. In 1966, she was appointed Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeals. President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed her to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 1968, a position she held until 1979 when she accepted appointment to President Jimmy Carter's cabinet as the first Secretary of Education. In 1981 she returned to private life, teaching and practicing law. She was a partner in the Los Angeles law firm of Hufstedler and Kaus, 1981 to 1995, and has been senior counsel at the firm of Morrison and Foerster since 1995. Hufstedler has written numerous articles for professional journals, newspapers and magazines in the fields of law, education, government, and international affairs. She has served on the Board of trustees of the California Institute of Technology and Occidental College, 1972 to 1989; Aspen Institute and Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, 1976 to 1993; Constitutional Rights Foundation, 1978 to 1980; National Resources Defense Council, 1983 to 1985; Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 1983 to 1984; the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, the Institute for Judicial Administration, and the American Law Institute. She served on the board of directors of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, 1983 to 2002. She is also on the board of directors of Harman International Industries, and is an emeritus director of Hewlett Packard Company and U.S. West, Inc.
