Arnold O. Wolfers was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in 1892. He received a degree in law from the University of Zurich in 1917, and a Ph.D. from the University of Giessen in 1924. He was a lecturer in political science at the Hochschule für Politik in Berlin from 1924 to 1930, and he became the director of the Hochschule in 1930. Wolfers came to the United States in 1933. He taught international relations at Yale University as a visiting professor (1933-1935), a professor (1935-1949) and as the Sterling Professor of International Relations at Yale (1949-1957). He was the first director of the Division of Social Sciences, and was Master of Pierson College from 1935 to 1949. In 1957 Wolfers became the founding director of the Washington Center of Foreign Policy Research, a position he held until he retired in 1965. He was an advisor and consultant to numerous organizations including the National War College, the Office of Strategic Services, and the Institute of Defense Analysis. Among Wolfer's numerous publications are Britain and France Between Two Wars and Discord and Collaboration. He died in 1968.
