David Scarlett Atkinson (1884-1956) was born in Camden County, Georgia, the son of Dr. Dean Dunwoody Atkinson and Sarah Hardee Scarlett Atkinson. After becoming a lawyer, Atkinson moved to Savannah in 1908. He soon became involved in local and state politics, serving as assistant city attorney, city attorney, as well as in the house and senate of the State General Assembly for many years.
