Meynell, Alice, 1847-1922
English author Alice Meynell was born in to a wealthy and artistic family. A voracious reader,she began writing poetry and was encouraged by literary friends to have it published, to great success. She met and married Wilfrid Meynell, and the couple would eventually produce seven children. Alice Meynell began writing prose to support their growing family, and her many fine essays were influential and admired. A gifted writer, her work is noted for clarity and erudition. In addition to writing poems and essays, she was also a journalist and lecturer; she was active in social issues, devout in her religious beliefs, and devoted to her family. She remains one of the major essayists of her day, and a gracious and timeless poet.
