Hays, George P. (George Price), 1892-1978

George Price Hays was born September 27, 1892 in Chee Foo, China to Presbyterian missionary parents. He attended El Reno High School, El Reno, Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma A and M College in 1917. During World War I, he was commissioned as a second Lieutenant with the 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. Hays rode horseback under heavy fire to maintain communications between artillery and infantry units. For this action at the Second Battle of the Marne, he received the Congressional Medal of Honor. During World War II, Hays was Brigadier General commanding the Artillery of the 2nd Infantry Division and landed at Normandy on D-Day plus one. Later he commanded the 10th Mountain Division during its Italian Campaign. He retired from the Army in 1953 as a Major General. General Hays died at his home in Pinehurst, N.C. in 1978.
