Mack, Pauline Beery, 1891-1974

Dr. Pauline Gracia Beery Mack was born 19 December 1891, in Norborne, Missouri. In 1913 she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Missouri and chaired science departments in three Missouri high schools before attending Columbia University where she received a master's degree in 1919. That year, she joined the Penn State faculty, completing her Ph.D. in 1932. In 1923 she married botanist Warren Bryan Mack who later became head of Penn State's Department of Horticulture. Dr. Mack served as chemistry professor (1932-1952) and director of the Ellen H. Richards Institute for Research in Foods, Shelter, and Clothing (1941-1952) at Penn State and as dean (1952-1962) and director of research (1952-1973) at Texas State College for Women. She was renowned for her pioneering research in the application of chemistry to study foods and textiles.
