Byles, Mather, 1735-1814

Mather Byles (1735-1814), Episcopal clergyman and Loyalist, was born in Boston, Mass., on 12 January 1735, the son of Mather Byles (1707-1788) and the great-grandson of Increase Mather (1639-1723). He graduated from Harvard in 1751 and settled as minister of the First Congregational Church of New London, Conn., in 1757. In 1768 he converted to Church of England and took a position with Christ Church in Boston, Mass., remaining there until 1775. In 1776, Byles became a refugee at Halifax, N.S., and was appointed chaplain of the garrison there. He remained in Halifax until 1788 when he was called to Trinity Church at St. John, N.S. Mather Byles died at St. John on 12 March 1814.
