Treves, Frederick, 1853-1923

Frederick Treves was a surgeon at the Royal London Hospital, also authoring studies on physical education, clothing and gastrointestinal surgery. He is known for an account of his friendship with Joseph Merrick, the 'Elephant Man', and also for having served as sergeant surgeon to King Edward VII. Treves performed an appendicectomy and drainage of an appendix abscess on the King in 1902, only two days before his intended coronation. Recovery from this surgery was uncomplicated and the following year Treves was made a baronet.
