Richard Vaux was born in London around 1751 and moved to Philadelphia in 1768. The Vaux family were Quakers, and father George was a doctor in England. Richard obtained an apprenticeship in the dry-goods firm of Samuel Sansom and Son and later established himself as a merchant. Because Vaux was suspected of being a loyalist, he was forced to leave Philadelphia during the American Revolution, and he spent several years traveling on business in England, the Continent, and the Caribbean.
