Biographical Note: Ernest G. Sihler was the first recipient of the Ph. D. in Greek (1878) awarded by The Johns Hopkins University.

Sihler was professor of Latin language and literature at New York University (1892-1923) and the author of published works in classical history and philosophy. Sihler was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana Jan. 2, 1853 and graduated fron Concordia College in 1869. He studied at the Universities of Berlin and Leipzig before entering Johns Hopkins where he was a student of Professor Basil L. Gildersleeve. Ernest G. Sihler died in Mount Vernon, NY January 8, 1942.
