Samuel Baldwin (1754-1850), a native of Newark, New Jersey, moved to Charleston, South Carolina and set up a classical school there. In 1780, the British attacked the city of Charleston, and Baldwin joined with other patriots in its defense. He was captured in April of 1780 and, after refusing to take an oath of loyalty to the British, was exiled to the South Carolina countryside. After the Revolution, Baldwin returned to Charleston before heading back to Newark to teach for a number of years. He died in 1850 at the age of 95.
