George Welton Bissell was born on July 14, 1866, in Poughkeepsie, New York. He graduated from Cornell University with an M.E. degree (1888). For the next three years, he taught experimental engineering at Cornell. Bissell was then hired by the Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University) as Assistant Professor (1891-1892) of mechanical engineering.
