Chalmers was a physician in 18th-century Charleston, S.C.; author of An essay on fevers (1767), and An Account of the Weather and Diseases of South Carolina (1776).

Robert Whytt (1714-1766) was born in Edinburgh, the son of an advocate, but left an orphan at age 6; he studied in St Andrews, Edinburgh, Paris and Leyden and began to practice as a doctor in 1738; appointed physician to King George III in Scotland from 1761; Whytt's important work concerned unconscious reflexes, in which he was an early believer; tubercular meningitis; and the treatment of urinary bladder stones.
