Edward Scouten was a teacher, author and lifelong educator of the deaf. Scouten taught for twenty years at Gallaudet University, was principal at the Louisiana and Florida schools for the deaf, and then taught English at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID). While at NTID, Scouten wrote his seminal text, "Turning Points in the Education of Deaf People." He retired from NTID in 1985.
