John Carter (1745-1814) served as an apprentice to Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) and David Hall (1714-1772) in Philadelphia, Pa., until 1768, when he moved to Providence, R.I. He became associated with Sarah Updike Goddard ( -1770) in the publication of the Providence Gazette.
