Salman Rushdie was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1947. He won the Booker Prize in 1981 for his second book, Midnight's Children. The Satanic Verses, his fourth novel caused controversy when it was published in 1988. Protests against Rushdie's book erupted around the world and the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against the author and his publishers on 14th February 1989.
