James Tassie (1735-1799) modeller and portrait medallionist, after training at the Glasgow Academy of Art moved to Dublin and then London where, in early 1785 fuelling the neo-classic rage, he made a series of original portrait reliefs of contemporary figures using a glass paste, a technique which now bears his name, Tassie.
