Black was a graduate of Butler University and a life-long resident of Indianapolis, Ind. Her father, Frank M. Black, worked for Wasson's Department Store. Her sister, Dorothy Black Lynn, married Charles J. Lynn, a vice-president of Eli Lilly & Co.
