Campbell, Ian, 1899-1978

Ian Campbell (1899-1978) received his Ph. D. in economic geology from Harvard in 1931. Most of his career was spent at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a professor in the Division of Geological Sciences (1931-1959) and a research associate (1959-1970). In 1959, he was appointed chief of the California Division of Mines and Geology, from which he retired in 1969. Campbell was director of the California Department of Conservation (1966-1967).

He was a professor and State Geologist. The American Geological Institute awards its most prestigious annual award in his honor.
