Steed, Thomas Jefferson, 1904-1983

Thomas Jefferson Steed was born in Texas in 1904 and moved to Oklahoma with his family when he was four. Prior to his Congressional career Mr. Steed worked in the newspaper business and served as the managing editor of the Shawnee, Oklahoma newspaper. He was elected as a Democrat from Oklahoma's fourth district in 1948 and was reelected to each succeeding congress for the next 32 years, retiring in 1981.

During his tenure in Congress, Steed served on the Appropriations, Small Business, Public Works, and Education Committees, as well as the Transportation Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on Military Construction. His most powerful legislative position was that of Chair of the Appropriation Subcommittee on the Treasury and Post Office Committee. He also served as a member of the Federal Paperwork Commission in the late 1970s. Tom Steed died in Shawnee, Oklahoma on June 8, 1983.
