Butler; worked for the U.S. Immigration Bureau, 1902-1928, stationed in Montana and Galveston, Texas; was director of prisoner of war camps for Woodrow Wilson administration during World War I; at the time of his death, Hampton was a resident of Gilroy, California.

Youngest son of Wade Hampton III and Mary Singleton McDuffie Hampton; in 1895 married Francis Hermson, a union that produced one daughter, Mary McDuffie Hampton.
