Bonham-Carter, Edgar, 1870-1956

Edgar Bonham-Carter was a jurist and legal administrator who was very active in creating or improving codes of laws in several Middle Eastern countries. Born in London and educated at Clifton College and Oxford University, he was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1895. He was selected to devise a set of laws for the Sudan, and succeeded famously; he held similar offices in Baghdad and Mesopotamia. Returning to England in 1921, he served on the London City Council and held several other official positions. In 1926 he married Charlotte Helen Ogilvy, daughter of Colonel William Lewis Kinloch Ogilvy.
