Ludovico Manin was the last Doge of the Venetian Republic, and was deposed by the French under Napoleon in 1797; the Republic ceased to exist and was ceded to Austria. The main branch of the Avogadro family died out in 1671 and the fief of Lumezzane came under the direct jurisdiction of Venice.
