Aside from Elizabeth Fielding's statement that she was nine years old at the time she wrote this letter, little is known of her. The stepmother she mentions was identified by the donor as a daughter of Jeremiah Brown of Hartford, Connecticut, who was state treasurer from 1835-1838. There were two Salems in Georgia at the time this letter was written, one in Clarke County and the other in Baldwin County.
