Curtis, Charles A. (Charles Albert), 1835-1907

Charles A. Curtis was born in Hallowell, ME, and died in Madison, WI. He graduated both with the Norwich University class of 1861 and from Bowdoin College the same year. He served during the Civil War and with the regular army until 1870. Charles Curtis served as professor of military science and tactics at Norwich from 1869 to 1876. He was elected president on 3 February 1877 and served until 1 July 1880, when he resigned. William Arba Ellis records the date of Curtis's election as president as 19 October 1876 in his history of Norwich University. However, according to the minutes of the board of trustees, Curtis was elected a trustee on 19 October 1876 but not made president until 1877. Curtis wrote many stories and articles for publication. He married Harriette Louise Hughes in 1866 and the couple had five children.
