After graduating from U. of Pennsylvania in 1845, Wetherill studied with James C. Booth and Martin H. Boyé in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as well as in Giessen and Paris. Wetherill then worked as a consulting chemist in Philadelphia and in Lafayette, Ind. He was the first chemist in the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and chemist for the Smithsonian Institution.
